The Business Card That Forgot to Introduce You

Most people think networking means making sure more people know your name. That instinct is wrong, and it costs years.
Here is what actually happens at most networking events. You meet someone, you explain what you do, they nod, you both move on. A week later they cannot recall enough about your business to refer you. Not because they forgot your name. Because they never understood you well enough to say anything useful about you to someone else.
Your name is not the asset. Their understanding of you is the asset.
This distinction changes everything about how you should invest your networking time.
If the goal is recognition, attend as many rooms as possible. If the goal is referrals and real business opportunities, something different is required: repeated, substantive interaction with the same people over time. The kind where someone can eventually say "I know exactly who you need to speak to, and I know exactly what to tell them about you" without putting you on the phone first.
That second outcome does not happen in one meeting. It does not happen in two. It develops through a pattern of showing up in the same structured environment, contributing to the same conversations, and letting people observe how you think, how you work, and what you actually care about.
What this means practically: the return on networking is not linear. The first few months feel slow. The fifth month, someone says something in a meeting that triggers a connection they would never have made in month one, because they finally understand your business well enough to see the fit. The referral comes from depth, not volume.
For established business owners, this reframe matters most. You are not under connected. You are already known in your current circle. The real question is whether the people around you understand your business specifically enough to send you opportunities you would not find on your own.
If the honest answer is no, the fix is not more events. It is a more intentional, structured environment where depth is the design, not the accident.
Meudyojak has been building exactly that kind of environment in Mumbai since 2013. Membership is open to business owners and experienced professionals with at least three years in their field.
